US Rep. Ihlan Omar authored a bill to create an office within the US State Department to combat Islamophobia or racism against Arabs and Muslims Americans.
Omar’s bill is in response to Islamophobic statements made by several republican members of congress including Lauren Boebert and Marjorie Taylor Greene. Omar and other members of the Democratic Party has called for Beobert to be stripped of her committee assignments. The Republican Party leadership has so far stood by their racist colleague and refused to take action against her.
It’s unclear if the bill would garner any votes from the republican party considering that Republican Party Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has yet to meaningfully denounce racist and Islamophobic members of his caucus.
