Fatemeh Anvari a popular third-grade teacher was removed from teaching her language art class in Chelsea Elementary school in Chelsea in Quebec area in Canada because she wears a hijab.
The school action against Anvari was based on a controversial law called Bill 21 that bars people working in certain government roles from wearing religious symbols. Anvari’s removal sparked outraged among parents and residents as well as some government officials who pledged support for a legal challenge.
Bill 21 is very problematic for Muslim women in particular because it violates their human rights and it fails to take into account that the hijab for Muslim women, or turban for Sikh men or head covering for religious Jews is not just a religious symbol like a cross is for Christians. The Hijab for Muslim women, is much more than a religious symbol, it’s part of an expression of faith without which a Muslim woman might feel in violation of one of the required tenets of her faith.
