The US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Israeli and Palestinian Affairs Hady Amr visited the family of 80-year old Palestinian-American Omar Asad who died after he was detained and abused by Israeli soldiers in the occupied Palestinian West Bank last January. Amr “shared support for a thorough criminal investigation and full accountability” by Israel whose soldiers were responsible for the death of Mr. Asad. This is not enough. The United States government should carry it’s own criminal investigation into the suspicious death of Mr. Asad as one of it’s citizens. Amr should strongly and vigorously defend the rights of American citizens especially Arab-Americans who are constantly subjected to mistreatment and abuse by Israel. He also should press the Israeli government to carry a real and meaningful criminal investigation of it’s own soldiers who handcuffed and abused an elderly man only because he happened to be an Arab and Palestinian in the Israeli-occupied Palestinian lands.
