Doubling down on how diversity goes beyond differences in race and socioeconomic status and must include individuality, Dr. al-Naser articulates massive health care disparities among Arab Americans. The prevalence of hate crimes has exacerbated mental health concerns in the Arab-American community, while other structural inequalities have contributed to rises in major illnesses as well. The article argues that offering Census data options for Arab Americans to identify themselves as a unique category will lead to “greater visibility and funding for a population long neglected and invisible.”
