A 16-year old female Muslim high school student was punched, beaten and had her hijab pulled off her by another student at Fairfax high school in Fairfax, Virginia. Yet, the school administration and the city’s police failed to protect the victim and to properly investigate the attack as a hate crime. Instead, both the school and the police dealt with the attack as a “fight” between students. Fairfax police said there was “no evidence” of hate crime committed. Members of the Arab and Muslim American community in the area feared a police cover up of the incident. They demanded proper investigation and accountability. Hundreds of students from Fairfax high school and five other high schools walked out in support of the victim.
