This article in the Guardian details the travails of Lara Sheehi, Professor of Clinical Psychology at George Washington University. An avowedly politically activist psychoanalyst, Sheehi has recently come under fire for making allegedly anti-semitic marks on campus. This case, though, has had repercussions far beyond academic freedom, but have torn apart the very field of psychoanalysis. The discipline now seems bifurcated between her supporters and opponents. The Arab-American Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) represented Sheehi, accusing GW of enabling a “hostile environment” for Arabs and Muslims and “setting a chilling precedent regarding academic freedom”. GW investigators ultimately cleared Sheehi of wrongdoing.
