Egyptian-American citizen Pierre Girgis was arrested by the FBI earlier this month for spying on other Egyptian Americans in the United States for the government of Egypt. Girgis was indicted and charged by the US Department of Justice for acting as an unregistered agent of the Egyptian government in the United States.
Girgis actions were atrocious and a betrayal. He acted as an agent and an informant for various Egyptian intelligence agencies according to a statement by US department of Justice. Egypt like other authoritarian Arab governments has no tolerance for freedom of opinions or dissent. Egyptian activists often subjected to false accusations, mistreatment and unfair trials for criticizing the government or president Abdel Fattah El Sisi. Arab-Americans should feel safe and protected in the United States when they exercise their freedom of speech or express their opinions about their countries of origins.
