NJ Muslim mayor who was denied White House entry: End the terror watch list

by Jasmine Hawamdeh

This article discusses how Mohamed Khairullah, mayor of Prospect Park, NJ, was arbitrarily blocked from attending a White House Eid al-Fitr celebration, owing to being arbitrarily placed on a government terror watch list. The article quotes professor Sahar Aziz at the Rutgers Law School, who reiterates that “people are not given any notice as to why they are on the list, much less an opportunity to challenge the basis for which they are on these watch lists…For the past 20 years, the U.S. government has created a behemoth intelligence apparatus that is eviscerating the civil rights and liberties of all Americans.” The article serves as a reminder that even the longest-serving mayor in the state of New Jersey is not immune to arbitrary racism and violation of civil rights.
