The Rise of Hate Crimes Against Arabs and Palestinians in America – A Consequence of Pro-Israel Zealotry and Political Rhetoric

by Jasmine Hawamdeh

In recent weeks, America has witnessed a worrying increase in hate crimes against Arabs and Palestinians, fueled by a toxic combination of pro-Israel extremism and political rhetoric that fails to acknowledge the basic human rights and dignity of the Palestinian people. This climate of hate, while a complex and multifaceted issue, has been exacerbated, in part, by President Joe Biden’s pronounced support for Israel’s military actions and a disregard for Palestinian life.

A poignant example of this disregard is President Biden’s delayed response to the tragic death of a 6-year-old Palestinian-American boy. It took six days for Biden to reach out to the grieving family, a delay that speaks volumes in the context of empathy. Biden’s public discourse often portrays Palestinians either as terrorists or as victims needing humanitarian aid, rarely acknowledging them as a people deserving of equal rights and self-determination. This one-dimensional portrayal contributes to a skewed public perception and fuels the bigotry that manifests in hate crimes.

The climate of hate is not only a result of political rhetoric but also the actions of pro-Israel zealots. College campuses and social media platforms have become battlegrounds where students advocating for Palestinian rights are doxxed and harassed. Such intimidation tactics are not only a direct attack on free speech but also propagate a narrative that equates support for Palestinian rights with anti-Semitism, further entrenching prejudice and hostility.

The situation worsens when former government officials, who should be ambassadors of tolerance and understanding, engage in harassing street cart vendors based on their ethnicity or perceived political stance. This behavior, coming from people who once held positions of power, legitimizes bigotry and sets a dangerous precedent.

Moreover, the media plays a significant role in perpetuating this climate of hate. Palestinian voices are often marginalized, while Zionist commentators are given platforms to indiscriminately label all Gazans as terrorists, without challenge or pushback from the media. This one-sided representation not only dehumanizes the Palestinian people but also encourages extremists who then feel justified in their hateful actions against Arabs and Palestinians in America.

The culmination of these factors creates a hostile environment where hate crimes flourish. It’s imperative to recognize that such bigotry and violence do not arise in a vacuum. They are the products of a sustained narrative that devalues Palestinian lives and rights. To combat this, we must demand more balanced political discourse, responsible media reporting, and a firm stand against all forms of hate, whether from individuals, groups, or those in positions of power.

As we advocate for fairness and justice for Palestinians, we must also fight against the hate crimes that have become all too common in our communities. It is a fight not just for the rights of Arabs and Palestinians, but for the soul of our society, which must be based on respect, equality, and justice for all.
